Re-Elect Stephanie Plante for Ward 12 Rideau-Vanier
Let's Keep Growing Stronger Together
Welcome to my campaign website.
I’m Stéphanie Plante, and I’m proud to serve as the municipal councillor for Rideau-Vanier.
I acknowledge that we are gathered on the unceded and unabandoned territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation. Thank you to everyone who organised today’s debate, and to each and every one of you for being here.
Four years ago, I ran because Rideau-Vanier needed a councillor who would be present, accessible and ready to fight for results.
Since then, we have secured Vanier’s first major municipal infrastructure investment since amalgamation: a new recreation centre. We stopped a large shelter from being imposed on Montréal Road, protected the francophone community centre in Lowertown. We advanced 159 affordable homes on Beausoleil, invested in acquisitions, and converted 211 Somerset. We now have bus-only lanes on Rideau and Montreal Rd, extended the 20 to Hurdman Station and stopped OC Transpo from reducing frequency on downtown buses. We have also worked to have safer streets, parks and community spaces across the ward.
But the job is not finished. We need safer streets, better transit, more housing, real solutions to homelessness and addiction, and trucks finally removed from King Edward. We have built up real momentum, and I am standing for re-election to finish what we have started.
This evening, you will hear many different visions for Rideau-Vanier.
Mine is grounded in a simple belief: our ward should not have to choose between compassion and safety, between growth and protecting our neighbourhoods, or between consultation and actually getting things done.
We have also brought people together through the Vanier 5 km run, school streets and community events. A record number of families are moving into the neighbourhood, and we are finally tackling problem properties and rent gouging.
But there is still work to be done. We need better public transport, more housing, real solutions to homelessness and addiction, and we must finally remove 3,500 heavy goods vehicles a day from King Edward Avenue by moving forward with the East Bridge project.
For decades, governments have studied an eastern bridge while 3,500 heavy trucks travel King Edward Avenue every day. I support the Kettle Island crossing because Lowertown families deserve safer streets, our region needs a reliable transportation network, and endless delay is not leadership. But it must include strong environmental protections and measures to prevent cut-through traffic in neighbouring communities.
You can read my biography here.
I know how city hall works and I am asking for your support so we can keep that momentum going and finish what we started. Thank you.
2022 Promises Kept
2026 Platform
Real Plans for Sandy Hill
- Continue leading the coordination among residents, students, universities, police, City services and community partners to eliminate the chaos associated with the Panda University Football Game between Carleton University and the University of Ottawa.
- Continue supporting the sixth interprovincial crossing as a more direct route for interprovincial traffic and heavy trucks with the aim of diverting truck traffic from the downtown core.
- Open Nelson Street to improve neighbourhood connectivity and access.
- Develop a stronger approach to protecting and celebrating Sandy Hill's architectural and cultural heritage while allowing thoughtful renewal and housing.
- Seek improvements to Strathcona Park that strengthens recreation opportunities and access to the Rideau River while protecting its natural setting.
- Develop targeted solutions for recurring garbage problems, particularly during university student move-in and move-out periods, with the aim to create better coordination between landlords, universities and City services.
- Work with uOttawa and Carleton Universities to make a girls'/women's flag football matchup part of future Panda Game celebrations.
Real Plans for Vanier
- Consult residents on the new Vanier recreation centre and ensure the community helps shape its facilities, programming and services.
- Build upon the Vanier 5K by exploring the addition of a 10K race and establishing a community based non-profit to support its long term future.
- Work toward new School Street initiatives at Assumption and Horizon-Jeunesse.
- Continue supporting the Vanier Co-operative Childcare Centre and the availability of affordable childcare spaces for Vanier families.
- Seek improvements to Riverian Park that strengthen recreation and access to the Rideau River while protecting its natural setting.
- Vanier needs both affordable veterinary care and food assistance so residents can keep and care for their pets. I continue to support keeping the animal food bank alongside the new veterinary clinic and will help the Ottawa Humane Society fundraise for its new Community Veterinary Clinic / animal welfare hub in Vanier.
- Continue supporting the transformation of the Salvation Army site at 333 Montréal Road away from large institutional shelter proposals and toward permanent and transitional housing.
Real Plans for Lowertown
- Continue supporting the transformation of Shepherds of Good Hope from traditional shelter infrastructure toward permanent supportive housing.
- Continue advocating for the sixth interprovincial crossing and a direct route for interprovincial truck traffic, reducing pressure on downtown neighbourhood streets.
- Continue working to expand access to francophone childcare in and around Lowertown and the ByWard Market.
- Implement traffic calming measures at the corner of Cathcart Street and Dalhousie Street to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and residents.
As a renter myself, I know the value of an affordable place to live in the neighbourhood you love. Here’s what I’m fighting for:
